What is allantoin?

Allantoin is an important active ingredient in cosmetics and medical products. It is used for its skin-soothing, moisturizing, and wound-healing properties. It occurs naturally in plants such as comfrey, rice, and horse chestnut.

Effects of allantoin

Allantoin is a versatile active ingredient with numerous positive properties for the skin:

Keratolytic effect: Allantoin loosens the bonds between dead skin cells and promotes their removal. This leads to a smoother and softer skin surface and can also help with psoriasis, eczema, and other skin conditions.

Cell-renewing effect: Allantoin stimulates the regeneration of skin cells, thus accelerating wound healing. It also promotes granulation and collagen synthesis, resulting in firmer and more elastic skin.

Moisturizing: Allantoin binds moisture in the skin. This makes the skin more supple and reduces dryness and itching.

Anti-inflammatory: Allantoin inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory messenger substances, thus relieving redness and irritation.

Soothing effect: Allantoin has a soothing effect on the skin and can therefore be used for sunburn, insect bites and razor burn.

Antioxidant: Allantoin protects the skin from free radicals that can cause cell damage.

Allantoin tolerability

Allantoin is well tolerated and generally does not cause side effects. Allergic reactions occur only in very rare cases.

Allantoin is therefore also well suited for rosacea , acne, neurodermatitis, psoriasis, etc.

Allantoin Interactions

Allantoin can be combined well with other active ingredients , such as azelaic , vitamin C or vitamin E , as no interactions are known.

Dosage of allantoin

Allantoin exhibits different effects at different concentrations:

  • From 0.2%: Keratoplastic effect: Allantoin dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells and acts similarly to a 10% urea solution, thereby reducing cornification.
  • Typical concentration: 0.5% to 2%: At this concentration, allantoin has a soothing, moisturizing effect and promotes wound healing.
  • From 5%: Keratolytic effect (only permitted in medical devices): In high concentrations, allantoin removes the stratum corneum of the skin.

The optimal dosage for your skin depends on your skin type and individual needs.

Allantoin: Occurrence and extraction

Allantoin is a byproduct of uric acid and can be extracted from urea. Urea is the result of metabolic processes that occur in most organisms, including animals, humans, and bacteria.

Allantoin occurs naturally in various plants, with comfrey being particularly rich in this active ingredient. It is also found in black salsify, wheat germ, soybean sprouts, rice , cauliflower, green beans, and horse chestnuts .

Horse chestnuts

Horse Chestnut: Aesculus Hippocastanum Seed Extract

Allantoin was formerly extracted from the larvae of the green bottle fly. These larvae have been used for centuries in wound healing because they selectively feed on dead tissue, releasing large quantities of allantoin in the process. Today, it is no longer necessary to kill larvae to obtain allantoin, as it can be synthesized both from plants and in the laboratory.
