Effect of Allantoin
Allantoin is a versatile active ingredient with numerous positive properties for the skin:
Keratolytic effect: Allantoin dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells and promotes their removal. This leads to a smoother and softer skin surface and can also help with psoriasis, eczema and psoriasis.
Cell-renewing effect: Allantoin stimulates the formation of new skin cells and thus accelerates wound healing. It also promotes granulation formation and collagen synthesis, resulting in firmer and more elastic skin.
Moisturizing: Allantoin binds moisture in the skin. This makes the skin more supple and reduces dryness and itching.
Anti-inflammatory: Allantoin inhibits the production of inflammatory messenger substances and thus relieves redness and irritation.
Soothing effect: Allantoin has a soothing effect on the skin and can therefore be used for sunburn, insect bites and razor burn.
Antioxidant: Allantoin protects the skin from free radicals that can cause cell damage.

Allantoin Interactions
Allantoin can be easily combined with other active ingredients , such as azelaic , vitamin C or vitamin E , as no interactions are known.
dosage of allantoin
Allantoin has different effects in different concentrations:
- From 0.2%: Keratoplastic effect: Allantoin dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells and acts similarly to a 10% urea solution, thereby reducing keratinization.
- Usual concentration: 0.5% to 2%: In this concentration, allantoin has a soothing, moisturizing effect and promotes wound healing.
- From 5%: Keratolytic effect (only permitted in medical products): In high concentrations, allantoin removes the stratum corneum of the skin.
The optimal dosage for your skin depends on your skin type and individual needs.
Allantoin: Occurrence and Extraction
Allantoin is a byproduct of uric acid, and can be extracted from urea. Urea is the result of metabolic processes that occur in most organisms, such as animals and including humans and bacteria.
Allantoin occurs naturally in various plants, with comfrey being particularly rich in this active ingredient. It is also found in salsify, wheat germ, soy germ, rice , cauliflower, green beans and horse chestnut .
In the past, allantoin was extracted from the larvae of the golden fly. These have been used for centuries in wound healing because they specifically eat dead tissue and release large amounts of allantoin in the process. Today, larvae no longer have to be killed to obtain allantoin because it can be synthesized both from plants and in the laboratory.
