Betaine: moisturizer with a secret superpower

Posted by Lara Schimweg on

INCI: betaine

Effect: moisturizing, reduces surfactants

Tolerance: very good

Betaine is an amino acid derived from beets. Betaine moisturizes the skin. The special thing about Betaine is that it is an osmolyte. For your skin, this means that the molecules control the cell water so that the skin layer always stays nice and moist .

Betaine's secret superpower: it reduces aggressive surfactants (detergents) in shampoos or cleaning agents. This is particularly nice for stressed, sensitive, dry skin, because aggressive surfactants wash out too much fat from the skin.
