Natural cosmetics: How good is it really?
Posted by Xeno Team on
Natural cosmetics do without synthetic ingredients.
Many natural ingredients can trigger allergies or irritate the skin. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to skin-friendly natural cosmetics.
Learn everything you need to know about natural cosmetics on this overview page.
What is natural cosmetics?
The term "natural cosmetics" encompasses cosmetic products made from natural raw materials. Natural cosmetics avoid synthetic fragrances, colorants, and preservatives, as well as petroleum products, silicones, and parabens. Instead, they often use plant oils, extracts, and, in many cases, essential oils. However, natural fragrances in the form of essential oils are not healthy for sensitive skin.
For this reason, we at Xeno have a very comprehensive "no" list to completely exclude irritating, aggressive ingredients. However, this is not the common approach in natural cosmetics.
Natural cosmetics prioritize environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, sustainable resources, and often also cruelty-free development. Certifications exist through seals such as NATRUE, BDIH, and Ecocert.
Natural ingredients
Natural ingredients are derived from plants, minerals, or other natural sources. They can be used in their raw form or processed in cosmetic products. Processed ingredients are often better tolerated by the skin.
Examples of natural ingredients
- Plant extracts: Aloe vera , green tea extract , paracress
- Oils: Jojoba oil, coconut oil, hemp oil , squalane , neutral oil
- Butter: Shea butter, cocoa butter
- Waxes: Beeswax, Carnauba wax
- Minerals: Clay, kaolin, sea salt, medicinal peat, medicinal chalk, thermal water
Advantages and disadvantages of natural cosmetics
Besides its many advantages, natural cosmetics also have some disadvantages. Below you'll learn how to avoid these drawbacks. This way, you can care for your skin with natural products and promote healthy skin.
Advantages
- Natural ingredients: Natural cosmetics are made from natural ingredients derived from plant or mineral raw materials. They are therefore free of synthetic ingredients such as parabens and artificial fragrances.
- Environmentally friendly: The production of natural cosmetics is more sustainable than that of conventional cosmetics. The ingredients are biodegradable and therefore do not pollute the environment. Often, the packaging is also more environmentally friendly.
- Animal-friendly: Often, no animal testing is conducted. No ingredients from vertebrates are used, and some natural cosmetics brands are vegan. Xeno is PETA-certified, does not conduct animal testing, and is vegan.
-
Values: Natural cosmetics brands usually also consider ethical and ecological aspects and promote fair trade practices.
Disadvantages
- Often less tolerable (with conventional natural cosmetics): Natural ingredients, such as essential oils, can trigger allergies. Natural cosmetic products often have the wrong pH value for the skin, thus disrupting the skin's microbiome. Some natural oils can cause breakouts and disrupt the skin barrier. Instead of synthetic preservatives, alcohol is usually used, which can dry out the skin.
- Shorter shelf life: Since no synthetic preservatives are used, many natural cosmetic products only last for 6 or a maximum of 12 months after opening.
- Limited selection: Not all desired effects or colors are available.
- Often less effective: Conventional natural cosmetics usually do without active ingredients, so the skin cannot be optimized.
- Availability: Possibly only available in specialized stores or online.
This article will show you how to switch your routine to natural cosmetics without having to accept all the disadvantages:
